| TXI’s 1995 Contribution to DFW Ozone Pollution
Nitrogen Oxides, volatile Organic Compounds
and Particulate Matter are all ozone-causing pollutants.
According to transportation division staff of the North Central Texas
Council of Governments, the average passenger car in DFW emits 40 pounds
of Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) a year and 38 pounds of Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs) a year. Figures for Particulate Matter (PM) emissions
were not available.
In 1995, TXI emitted 10,860,200 pounds of NOX, 122,000 pounds of VOCs
and 943,800 pounds of PM.
If TXI were forced to operate at the level of emissions for a modern
hazardous waste incinerator - a goal of the parties intervening in TXI’s
current permit hearing - it would result in the following reduction of
ozone-producing
emissions:
NOX Emissions Reduction from 5430 tons per year to 232 tons per year =
taking 271,505 cars off the road
VOC Emissions Reduction from 61 tons per year to 6 tons per year =
taking 3215 cars off the road
TOTAL REDUCTIONS OF NOX & VOCs = 274,720 cars off the road. |
