Alexandra Powe Allred, a former U.S.
national athlete, lives in Midlothian with her husband and three
children. Alex is a freelance writer of adult non-fiction and
children’s books, a runner and avid outdoors enthusiast.
Kerri Allred,
12, is the youngest board member to DAR. A born environmentalist, Kerri
is an accomplished artist, classically trained violinist and animal
lover. She is a member of the Olde Time Fiddlers Association and she is
the founder of allgreenkids.com. Recently, Kerri was asked to appear
as a judge for an art contest with the Sierra Club and Earthjustice.
Becky Bedsole Bornhorst,
a native Dallasite, is a homemaker in DeSoto. Her two children were in
elementary school when she joined Downwinders – they both now attend the
University of Texas. She is the former business manager of a children’s
nonprofit advocacy organization and a legal secretary.
Sandra
Breakfield is the treasurer of Downwinders at Risk, a Dallas resident
and mother of two. She has owned an accounting consulting firm for 20
years.
Reecea
Roderick Henderson and husband Doyle, residents of Cleburne,
have four children and one grandchild. Reecea was Staff Director of
Clean Water Action, Program Director of Texas Citizen Action, and
certified as a Grassroots Organizer at Midwest Academy in Chicago. She
serves as Cleburne Ward Relief Society President of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints and Co-President of the Cleburne High School
Golden Pride Band Boosters. She works as Office Manager for an
international amusement ride sales firm in Arlington.
Quincy Perales is a registered nurse
who has been active in encouraging health professionals to get involved
in clean air issues. She’s a Midlothian resident and mother of two.
Merle Ann Roten, a Duncanville
native and graduate of SMU, lives in Cedar Hill. A licensed realtor
since 1979, Merle is a board member of the Greater Dallas Association of
Realtors and an active member in Chambers of Commerce, historical
associations and libraries.
Jim Schermbeck, a Ft. Worth native,
is a 28-year veteran of environmental organizing and has been working on
cement plant pollution issues since 1989. He is an independent
filmmaker and father of one.
Irvin Uphoff, a resident of Dallas,
is a retired facilities consultant. He
is a member of the
American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning
Engineers and the American Society of Energy Engineers.
Irv serves as technical advisor for Downwinders. He has two daughters
and two granddaughters.
Honorary Members:
Sue Pope, a Midlothian resident,
is the
driving force behind the founding of Downwinders At Risk and its
spiritual leader. She’s been organizing against TXI’s waste burning
since 1991. She serves on the local Dallas area advisory council of the
American Lung Association. Sue is nationally known as the “Lois Gibbs of
cement kiln incineration.”
Virginia Kilgore, a native of
Duncanville, is currently serving as Downwinders’ overseas ambassador.
She is currently living and traveling in Europe. Gin began her activism
while still in Duncanville High School. She has organized Earth Day
events, benefit concerts and participated in a hunger strike to protest
TXI’s hazardous waste permit in front of Governor Bush’s office at the
state capitol. |
